How to choose the Best Car Seat For Grandparents in 2024 | Ultimate Guide 2024
By law, car seats must be homologated. Choose only child seats that have the orange approval label with the ECE lettering on the back or base of the seat. All child seats recommended on this page comply with the homologation standards in force in 2019.
The seats can be approved according to the ECE R44 standard, which divides them according to the weight of the child, or according to the new ECE R129 standard (also called I-Size), which classifies them according to height.
Practical tip: buy only approved child seats.
Car seat groups
The R44 standard, based on weight, classifies child seats into 5 groups:
- Group 0 - up to 10 kg (up to approximately 12 months)
- Group 0+ - up to 13 kg (up to approximately 24 months)
- Group 1 - 9 to 18 kg (approximately 9 months to 4 years)
- Group 2 - 15 to 25 kg (3 years to 6 years)
- Group 3 - 22 to 36 kg (5 to 12 years)
The new R129 standard is not based on weight, but on height. Seat manufacturers can determine the reference ranges for their models themselves. The classification by groups thus disappears. However, the R129 sits alongside the R44, it does not replace it. The ECE R44 homologation will remain valid in parallel with the new directive, so you can safely buy a seat based on the weight group, or on the classification by height.
The existence of 5 groups does not mean that you will have to buy 5 seats over the course of the child's life: a single seat can cover more than one group.
In fact, the safety of the child can be guaranteed by buying only 2 seats in his lifetime:
- A first for babies of the 0/0 + group up to 13 kg or the equivalent I-Size from 40-45 cm (starting from birth)
- A second seat that covers a very wide weight or height range: group 1/2/3 seats are suitable for children weighing 9 to 36 kg.
Even if the car seat of group 1 facing forward can be used from 9 kg (about 9 months), it is important that you do not move too soon from the initial group 0+ to group 1. Children should be carried as much as possible. as long as possible with a rear-facing restraint (reboard). At least up to 18 months, these are preferable to seats mounted in the direction of travel because, in the event of a frontal collision the head, cervical vertebrae, and back are better supported.
Practical tip: For children, up to 13 kg choose a group 0+ or i-size equivalent seat. For children over 13 kg choose a trivalent seat of group 1/2/3.

Carrycot or baby carrier?
Group 0 also includes the so-called “carrycots”: padded cradles to be fixed with the car seat belts, in which the child travels lying down. They lack both attachment points to be secured to the car seat, and special restraint systems for the baby. In the event of an accident, the baby risks being catapulted out of the carrier. They also tend to be bulky and complicated to assemble.
The so-called baby eggs, on the other hand, are bucket seats ideal for transporting babies, because they guarantee superior protection.
Practical tip: for babies choose the car seat because it is much safer.
Safety
The most important function of the seat is to protect children in the car in the event of a collision. Children, due to their particular morphology, are especially vulnerable and need more protection than a simple seat belt.
Children are not miniature adults. The proportions of a child's body are different. A newborn's head makes up ⅓ of its total weight. If we consider their height, a newborn's head is oversized compared to that of an adult.
Furthermore, in this early stage of life, many bones such as those of the neck, back, and pelvis are still developing, and it is important that they are not too stressed under normal travel conditions, and that they are maximally protected and supported in the event of an accident, to reduce the frequency and severity of injuries.

Homologation is not enough
Homologation is not enough to assess the safety of a model, because there can be a great disparity in performance between child seats with the same homologation.
This is why to write this guide I relied on the data collected by the best independent agencies that carry out consumer protection tests, such as ATAC, TCS, Altroconsumo, etc.
These agencies, using specialized equipment, dummies, and sensors, subject the various models of child seats to more stringent and rigorous tests than those that verify the minimum legal requirements for homologation.
This is important because you want the maximum possible safety for your baby, not the minimum.
Crash test
The most important tests are those of crash tests, performed in the two most common scenarios: frontal and side collision.
These tests show that some models protect babies and children optimally, others expose them to serious or even fatal risks.
These tests are performed in an extremely rigorous manner: they have been repeated over and over again, with the seat installed in all possible configurations, with different car models at different speeds, and with realistic mannequins representing different ages and morphologies, equipped with sensors for assessing the real risks to which a child is exposed in the event of a collision.
Practical tip: only choose child seats that have achieved excellent scores in independent tests. All the seats recommended on this page respect this parameter.

ISOFIX
ISOFIX is an international standardized fastening system for car seats. Thanks to the uniform attachment points, child seats with ISOFIX support can be quickly and securely attached directly to the car body.
The seats equipped with ISOFIX hooks guarantee greater stability and better protection in the event of a frontal and side-impact. They also reduce the risks of incorrect installation of the restraint system.
Practical tip: if your car has the appropriate fastening system, choose an ISOFIX car seat.
Baby comfort
The comfort of the child is also an important factor in choosing a car seat. The quality of the materials, the padding, the support for the head to prevent it from dangling when the baby falls asleep, the options for adjusting the headrest are all things that I have considered to draw up the ranking.
Ease of use
Other aspects I have considered:
- Ease of assembly and disassembly (also important to reduce the risk of installation errors) and of securing the child to the car seat;
- Size in the car and weight, because often the seat has to be moved from one car to another, like that of grandparents;
- Easy cleaning and washing lining;
- Accessories are available.
Price
This is not the most important aspect but for the same safety and comfort, of course, choose the most convenient model.

FAQs
Can I Use The Same Car Seat For My Newborn As I Use For My Toddler?
No, you cannot use the same car seat for a newborn and a toddler. Infant car seats are designed specifically for newborns and smaller infants up to 22-35 pounds (10-16 kg) and up to 30-32 inches (76-81 cm) in height, while convertible car seats can be used from birth to toddlerhood, accommodating kids up to 65 pounds (29 kg) or more. It is recommended to use an infant car seat for the first year of a child's life and then switch to a convertible car seat.
Should A 7 Year Old Be In A Car Seat?
No, a 7-year-old child is typically too large for a car seat. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), children who have outgrown their car seats should be properly secured in a seat belt. For most kids, this is around 8 years of age or when they reach 4'9" in height.
However, some children may need to be secured in a booster seat until they are big enough for the seat belt alone. It is recommended to follow the guidelines set by your state's laws and the manufacturer's instructions for your vehicle and child's height and weight.
Should the Car Seat Go Behind the Driver Or the Passenger?
The location of a car seat depends on several factors, including the type of car seat, the size of your vehicle, and the position of other passengers.
Generally, it is recommended to install a rear-facing car seat in the back seat of the vehicle, in a central position if possible. This is because the middle of the back seat is the safest spot in the car in the event of a crash. If a center position is not available, the passenger side is considered safer than the driver side because it is further away from traffic.
For forward-facing car seats and booster seats, they can be installed in any of the back seat positions. The middle position is still the safest, but it's also important to consider access to the seat belt, ease of installation, and proximity to other passengers.
It is important to always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your car seat and vehicle, as well as your state's child passenger safety laws, to ensure the car seat is installed correctly and provides optimal protection for your child.
Is It Ok To Buy Second-Hand Baby Car Seat?
It is generally not recommended to buy a used car seat for several reasons:
- Safety: The history of the car seat is unknown and it may have been involved in a crash, which can compromise its safety. Car seats also have expiration dates, after which the plastic and other materials can become brittle and less effective in a crash.
- Recall: Car seats can be recalled for safety reasons, so it's important to have access to current information about the seat. If you buy a used car seat, you may not know if it has been recalled.
- Proper installation: Installing a car seat properly can be challenging, and it's important to know the seat's complete history to ensure it was not misused or damaged.
- Cleanliness: Used car seats may not be as clean as new seats, and they may have been exposed to germs or other contaminants.
It's best to buy a new car seat that meets current safety standards and has not been previously used or damaged. This will ensure that your child is properly protected while riding in a car.
What Happens If A Baby Is In A Car Seat Longer Than 2 Hours?
There is no set time limit for how long a baby can be in a car seat, but it is recommended to take frequent breaks to ensure the baby's comfort and safety. Prolonged use of a car seat can lead to physical discomfort and put the baby at risk for positional asphyxia, a condition in which the body's position interferes with breathing.
The following are some general guidelines for safe use of a car seat:
- Take breaks: It's a good idea to take breaks every hour or two to allow the baby to stretch, move around, and change positions.
- Avoid prolonged use: Try to limit the amount of time the baby spends in the car seat, especially for trips that are longer than 2 hours.
- Check for comfort: Make sure the baby is comfortable, with their head supported and not leaning to one side, and that the straps are not too tight or digging into their skin.
- Move the seat: If the baby falls asleep, it's a good idea to move them from the car seat to a crib or bassinet to prevent positional asphyxia.
It is important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for your specific car seat and to consult with your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby's comfort or safety while in the car seat.
What Kind Of Car Seat For A 8-Year-Old?
For an 8-year-old child, the recommended type of car seat is a booster seat. Booster seats are designed to raise the child to the correct height so that the seat belt fits correctly and provides proper protection in the event of a crash.
Booster seats come in two types: high-back and backless. High-back boosters provide more neck and head support and are recommended for vehicles with low seat backs or no headrests. Backless boosters are more compact and are a good option for vehicles with high seat backs and headrests.
It is important to choose a booster seat that meets federal safety standards and is appropriate for your child's height and weight. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that children use a booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or have reached 4'9" in height.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the booster seat and your vehicle, and make sure the seat belt fits the child correctly, with the lap belt low across the hips and the shoulder belt crossing the chest. The goal is to ensure that the child is properly secured and protected in the event of a crash.

What Car Seat Is Suitable For A 7-Year-Old?
The type of car seat that is suitable for a 7-year-old child depends on their height and weight.
If your child is still within the height and weight limits of a forward-facing car seat, it is recommended to use a forward-facing car seat with a harness. Most forward-facing car seats can accommodate children up to 65 pounds or more, so it is important to check the weight limit of the car seat you are considering.
If your child has outgrown a forward-facing car seat, a booster seat is a next step. A booster seat raises your child up so that the seat belt fits properly across their lap and shoulder. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using a booster seat until the child is at least 4 feet 9 inches tall and between 8 and 12 years old.
When choosing a booster seat, look for one that has a backrest and headrest to provide added support and protection in the event of a side-impact collision. Also, make sure the booster seat fits your vehicle and that the seat belt fits your child properly.
Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions and follow all laws and regulations regarding car seat use in your state or country to ensure that your child is properly protected while riding in a car.
Is 7 Too Old For A Booster Seat?
No, 7 years old is not necessarily too old for a booster seat. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children should use a booster seat until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall and between 8 and 12 years old.
The main purpose of a booster seat is to ensure that the seat belt fits properly across a child's lap and shoulder. If a child is still too small to fit in a regular seat belt without the use of a booster seat, it is recommended to continue using a booster seat until they have reached the appropriate height and weight.
It's important to note that children grow at different rates, so it's important to check your child's height and weight to determine if they still need a booster seat. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions and follow all laws and regulations regarding car seat use in your state or country to ensure that your child is properly protected while riding in a car.
What Age Is 13kg Car Seat?
Car seat weight limits are usually based on the weight of the child, not the age. However, a 13kg car seat is typically suitable for infants and toddlers from birth to approximately 12-15 months old.
It's important to note that car seat weight limits can vary depending on the specific model and manufacturer, so it's always best to check the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines to ensure that you are using the car seat properly and in accordance with their recommendations.
Additionally, many car seats also have height limits in addition to weight limits, so be sure to check both when selecting a car seat for your child. It's also important to follow all laws and regulations regarding car seat use in your state or country to ensure that your child is properly protected while riding in a car.
What Car Seat Should A 6-Year-Old Use?
The type of car seat that a 6-year-old child should use depends on their height, weight, and developmental needs. Here are the general guidelines for car seats for 6-year-old children:
- If your child is under 4 feet 9 inches tall, they should still use a booster seat. A booster seat helps position the seat belt properly over the child's lap and shoulder to provide the best protection in case of an accident. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children use a booster seat until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall and between 8 and 12 years old.
- If your child is over 4 feet 9 inches tall and weighs more than 40 pounds, they can use a regular car seat belt. However, it's important to make sure that the seat belt fits properly across your child's lap and shoulder. The lap belt should fit snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach, and the shoulder belt should cross the middle of the chest and shoulder, not the neck or face.
When selecting a booster seat or regular car seat for your child, be sure to consider their height, weight, and age, as well as the guidelines and regulations for car seat use in your state or country. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines for installation and use of the car seat.
Conclusion
The purchase of a child seat for your grandchild depends on how long you use it and how long you use it. If your grandchildren don't use it often, you can buy a short and cheap convertible seat. On the other hand, if your grandchildren usually drive, you may want to spend a little money on the integrated child seat. Consider these needs and find a child seat that suits you.
